How to cast on knitting with two needles

Learning the basic knitting technique makes your project outstanding as well as enhances your knitting skills. The cast-on method is the stepping stone and the basis of all the projects and works well with any knitting needle type. There is no fixed cast-on method, however, most of us use the same traditional long tail technique. It is important to check the suggestions on the design. Does your pattern require cast-on knitting with two needles? But you only know it with one needle. In this post, we will cover two-needle cast-on, why it is needed, and the process of doing it.

Why do you require cast-on knitting with two needles?

Cast-on is an important technique because it will lay the foundation of your project. With two needles you get a stretchy fabric instead of one. The method goes perfectly well with lace and 2x2 rib patterns. It's a little complex but worth learning because you get neat, sturdy edges. It does not matter whether you are working with circular pins or straight knitting needles.

What material do you need?

Before we start working on it, let’s gather all the supplies.

  • Choose double-pointed knitting needles or single-pointed ones as per the pattern requirements. You can experiment with different needles as well, but we recommend using the needles with a size of US 6 (4mm), or US 7 (4.5mm) to see the stitches.
  • You can work with any yarn in which you are comfortable. Check the pattern instructions on the yarn label or try DK-weight yarn because it's versatile and easy to work with.

Steps to cast on knitting with two needles

Here are the steps you can follow:

Step 1: Start with the slip knot, which is simple to make. The slip knot should be around the bigger needle leaving a tail approximately 5 times long.

Step 2:  Then, slide the slip-knot onto the needle, tighten it, and your needle should be in the left hand.

Step 3: Now, insert the right knitting needle through the front of the slip knot and make sure it’s behind the left needle.

Step 4: Your working yarn ball is behind the needles, wrap it around the right needle anticlockwise.

Step 5: Draw a loop by going down through the slip knot with your right needle.

Step 6: Now, uplift your right needle carefully and transfer the new stitch to the left needle.

Step 7:  Tighten the stitch and repeat the steps 2-5 until you get the desired cast-on stitches.

Tips to get the perfect cast-on with two needles

Here are some tips that you can follow:

  • Use stitch markers to identify, which is your first needle.
  • Avoid twisting your yarn and keep the stitches on the needle instead of sliding them.
  • Make sure the needles are parallel.
  • Hold them together to get a stretchy cast on.

By following the above cast-on method with two needles you will successfully create any patterns. However, it needs a little bit of practice. With the right needles and knitting accessories, make unique and wonderful designs.
